A Book Called ‘Kurdistan’ and a Whitened Copper Yoghurt Bowl

My late father, Ibrahim Ahmed, had a copy of this book. One of his friends borrowed and never returned it. We loved this book because it had a picture of a crowded Suleimaniya market and in the background of the picture is our house. I found a copy of this book, by chance, a couple of years ago in a charity shop in London. I bought it for 50p. When I went back to Kurdistan for the first time in the mid-90’s after having been away for almost 20 years, my family and friends insisted that I buy something from there to take back with me to London. I said “All I wanted was to see you again and to come back to my country”. In the end I bought one thing. It was this yoghurt container. You can see one of these in the picture on the cover of the book. Every morning in Kurdistan, you wake up and go to market with your container to fetch some yoghurt. (It is full-fat, like Greek yoghurt). My family asked “Is that all you want?”
