Emblem of the Republic

ourlife27

Originally, this emblem was used by the Sumerians, Assyrians and Babylonians over 4000 years ago – it represents the sun as the centre of the universe. After the revolution of July 14th, 1958, which established the Iraqi Republic, this symbol was adopted as an emblem . This was designed by Jawad Selim (The pioneer of modern Iraqi art. A painter and sculptor). The use of this emblem to represent the Republic linked it to the ancient history of the country. The dagger and sword represent Arab and Kurdish unity, as do the sheaves of wheat (Kurdish) and rice (Arab). The encircling cog represents the Iraqi working class. The artist, Jawad Selim, was able to depict the unity of the Iraqi people. I made this copy from a stamp and had it enlarged.
