A Pair of Earrings,
a Necklace and a Ring
These
earrings were designed by Sawsen Al Karkhi who is still in Iraq. Her
grandfather
was a well-known
popular poet, Mullah Aboud Al Karkhi.
She is a creative artist who collects old things and then redesigns them.
My cousin gave me these earrings in 1991 as a present. The pendant is
in the form of a camel – it was a gift from my school because I
came first in my class in 1970. I got the ring in Kerbala.

Bracelet
I
bought this bracelet from Suleimaniya in Kurdistan, during a trip I
took there with a group
of
my friends. It’s a trip I always remember.
We laughed a lot. I bought the bracelet a salesman in the market. He
flirted with me and sold the bracelet at a reduced price – only
2 and a half dinars. The cost of the whole trip was 15 dinars,

Kohl Holder (Makhalla)
I
didn’t bring
this with me.
I used to see it sitting like a crown on my grandmother’s table
Never knowing what it was for
It was part of her daily ritual and identity
Then I saw it on my mother’s dressing table
And I dared to touch it and try to learn its secrets
By pouring its contents out
When I needed it I couldn’t find it
I wanted it with me
I dived into my memory for it
I tried to depict it in one of my prints
I drew it and it was a pale copy
Then someone brought it to me
Today it sits on my table
And my daughter plays with it
